About the Project

The story

On Amsterdam's waters, a constellation of golden lights flickers and dances, bringing a piece of India's Festival of Lights to the Netherlands. "Deepam, The Light," created by renowned Indian artist Vibhor Sogani, transforms traditional Diwali oil lamps into a contemporary light installation that speaks to the universal human desire to push back darkness with light."In Indian culture, the act of lighting a lamp carries profound meaning," explains.

The installation gains additional significance in the Netherlands, where it creates an unexpected cultural bridge. In nearby Suriname, where a significant Indian diaspora maintains its cultural traditions, Diwali has been celebrated as a national holiday since 2010. This connection adds another layer to the installation's message about the universality of light as a symbol of hope and renewal.

THE
PROCESS

Each polished metal lantern contains custom DiGi LED Strip Amber Drift technology, designed to mimic the organic, flickering movement of flame. Mounted on floating supports and anchored by an underwater frame, these modern deepams create a quiet dialogue between ancient ritual and contemporary technology.

Sogani, whose monumental works like "Sprouts" in Delhi and "Joy" in Dubai have established him as one of India's leading creative professionals, brings to Amsterdam a piece of his heritage while speaking to a universal truth. Born in Jaipur, Rajasthan, he carries forward the rich tradition of Indian craftsmanship into the realm of contemporary light art.
