About the Project

The story

In preparation of Amsterdam Light Festival 2023 we were challenged by Studio MAST to come up with a solution for a unique art piece! A four meter high art piece that mimics facial recognition algorithms and lights up the night by generating different shapes, colours and faces. With the application of several high quality LED solutions our team created a masterpiece to be seen by many.

Visualising the bias embedded in AI and algorithms. ‘Is it really you?’ makes the abstract topic of AI tangible for visitors. It makes the festival goers question: does AI see me for who I am? With the use of waterproof RGBW LED Neonflex we ensured a durable and high quality solution.

THE
PROCESS

Dedicated engineering and expertise came in with the drawing of the custom solution that this projects needed. With several concepts and products tested we eventually landed on the perfect solution.

The art work consists of a stainless steel frame and a network of a several hundred waterproof (protection degree IP67) LED segments, mounted to the construction. Together they form the outline of a human face. We used RGBW to achieve the best results by seamlessly combining colors with light, ensuring a high light output for optimal performance, even in daylight conditions.

In an constantly changing pattern, the network of LED pixels illuminate the face as tracked by a facial recognition algorithm. Thanks to the waterproof connectors, all products are plug-and-play, ensuring an extremely easy and fast installation process.
