About the Project

The story

For the Amsterdam Light Festival 2023, OneEightyOne was commissioned to develop the technical lighting solution for Le Saut, an immersive light artwork by French artist Arnaud Laffond. The installation explores the complex relationship between people and emerging technologies, inviting visitors to reflect on the opportunities and challenges that innovation brings through the use of light, movement, and interaction.

Working closely with the artist, OneEightyOne translated the creative concept into a reliable and high-performance lighting installation. Our team was responsible for the engineering, production, and construction of the custom light grid, ensuring the artwork delivered the intended visual impact while meeting the technical requirements of a large-scale outdoor installation. The result is a striking example of how bespoke LED lighting engineering can bring artistic visions to life in public spaces.

THE
PROCESS

Engineering challenges

At first the engineering started, searching for the optimal solution to realize a challenging project like this floating light object. The first challenge presented itself in the form of power and wiring, followed by the technical solution of the application of the lighting.

Waterproof solution

In the selection of products we quickly came to the conclusion that our waterproof LED tape with IP68 rating would be perfect for this art work. The art work floats on the canals and therefor required a durable waterproof solution. Using our 3535 Profiles in combination with the high square cover to ensure optimal viewability.

Installation process

The floating grid on the water is four by four meters. From our workshop, it was transported in its entirety onto a pontoon boat to its current location. Thanks to the square cap, the grid is lit up from every corner, creating a floating 3D object lighting up the canals of Amsterdam.
