About the Project

The story

Following a comprehensive four-year renovation and innovation project, Eindhoven Central Station was fully modernized by the end of 2016. OneEightyOne contributed to this transformation with the installation of a light stretch ceiling, creating a bright and welcoming environment for travelers: "We give the travelers the feeling that they are actually walking in daylight", - says Luc Veeger, from Architect Arcadis.

Upon arrival at Eindhoven Central Station, visitors are immediately greeted by the striking ceiling design beneath the tracks. The integrated LED lighting system delivers a uniform soft light, enhancing both comfort and visibility throughout the passageway. Thanks to the advanced DiGi EvenLight Panel technology, the light stretch ceiling provides highly effective functional lighting while creating a spacious and contemporary appearance. The combination of soft, evenly distributed LED illumination and a light-colored ceiling design contributes to a safe, pleasant, and inviting experience for all visitors passing through the station.

THE
PROCESS

Automatic dimming with daylight sensors

This is because of the daylight sensors which ensure an optimal brightness. The sensors adjust the LEDs to the actual daylight from outside. When it gets darker outside, the lights are dimmed. When the sun gets brighter, the LEDs follow. To create a safe feeling for everyone walking through the tunnel, we chose to divide the lighting into five zones. We installed a DiGidot C4 controller in every zone, to control the lighting for each zone individually.

The greatest challenge

For this project, it was necessary to develop new LED strips, because the lighting was too close to the canvas to make the use of standard LED strips possible. The space between the two surfaces was therefore minimal. For the best integration of the LED strips, we went to Eindhoven multiple times to test various samples and mock-ups. This way we came to a perfectly suitable design.

Plug & play system

For this project we created custom aluminium frames with the LED strips attached to the back. This allowed for the frames could easily be placed on the ceiling. They were prepared  in our workshop according to our plug & play policy to ensure an easy installation. Our best installers went to Eindhoven to set up, connect and program this LED solution.

"

For this project, we developed a new LED Strip because of the minimum distance between the light and the cover. This LED Strip matched the new ambiance of the Eindhoven Central Station perfectly.
