About the Project

The story

The Eurostar UK Terminal is a place where the journey begins. A 44 meter stretched ceiling resembling a skylight welcomes hundreds of passengers aboard every day.

Created in collaboration between SuperImpose and ZJA Architects, the designers were inspired by the British and Dutch painters of the 18th century, whose fascination with the sky transmitted into their art. Much like inspiring those artists centuries ago, the cloudy skies above the North Sea became an inspiration for this project. 

To replicate that airy effect, light is washed across a large translucent canvas with hundreds of DiGi Backlight Modules hidden behind it. Each module uses  pixel control, so every single dot can be controlled on its own. The Tunable White color spectrum covers the full range from 2700K to 6500K, letting the sky feel warm or cool depending on the desired scene. 



THE
PROCESS

 Light Scenes 

The ceiling is programmed with 4 distinct light scenes connected to the train schedule update system. The sky reacts in different motion depending whether the train is approaching, being delayed, cancelled, or on its way. 

Daylight Effect

Due to the security regulations at the border control, the terminal does not get any natural light. To reduce stress during the traveling experience, the design had to call for a solution that would bring the illusion of daylight indoors - making the travellers and workers feel more at ease.  

DiGi Pixel Control

With an impressive lumen output of 35lm per unit, the DiGi Backlight Modules are a perfect solution for content-driven projects that require preciseness and scene adaptability.
