About the Project

The story

The iconic Hotel Okura Amsterdam has been enhanced with a new architectural lighting installation that combines visual impact with practical functionality. To modernize the existing system, the original fixtures were replaced with powerful G54 wall-washers equipped with advanced RGBW 4-in-1 LED technology. These high-performance luminaires deliver consistent colour mixing and a uniform beam distribution, resulting in a smoothly illuminated canopy that enhances the hotel's presence within the Amsterdam skyline.

The new LED lighting system not only improves the building's appearance but also increases energy efficiency and reliability. Through precise wall-washing effects, the lighting highlights the architecture of the hotel while creating a clean and elegant nighttime identity that is visible from afar.

What makes this lighting installation truly unique is its functional role as a modern-day barometer. The illuminated canopy communicates the weather forecast for the following day through a series of colour-coded light displays. A bright blue illumination indicates sunny weather ahead, green signals poor weather conditions, and white represents an unsettled forecast. Thanks to the flexibility of the RGBW LED technology, the system can accurately display these colours while maintaining a consistent and vibrant appearance.

THE
PROCESS

Barometer

Hotel Okura Amsterdam’s iconic rooftop barometer uses light to display the next day’s weather forecast, making it a recognizable feature in the city skyline.

Color precision

We utilised the 54W Linear for its high output and efficiency. The fixture is IP67 and IK08 and is supplied on 230 voltage. Using an internal driver, the luminaire is supplied with RGBW and has a 60-degree optic.

Dynamic LED Colours

The LED lighting system changes colour based on expected weather conditions. Blue indicates sunshine, green signals poor weather, and white represents unsettled conditions.
